Paint correction is a measured polishing process used to improve defects within a vehicle’s clear coat. Unlike waxes or fillers that temporarily disguise the surface, correction removes a controlled amount of material to reduce visible swirls, oxidation, water spotting, light scratches, and haze. The goal is greater clarity and gloss without compromising the remaining finish.
Assessment comes before polishing
Every paint system responds differently. Vehicle history, previous repairs, clear-coat thickness, defect depth, panel shape, and the customer’s goal all affect the safest approach. The correct combination of machine, pad, polish, technique, and inspection lighting matters. Removing too little material leaves avoidable defects behind; removing too much can reduce the clear coat’s ability to protect the color layer underneath.
What paint correction can—and cannot—do
Correction can significantly improve defects that remain within a workable portion of the clear coat. It cannot replace missing paint, repair dents, rebuild failing clear coat, or safely erase every scratch. A scratch that catches a fingernail, stone chips, corrosion, cracking, peeling, and body damage may need touch-up, refinishing, or collision repair instead.
That distinction is important because an honest recommendation may be partial improvement rather than complete removal. Preserving the paint system takes priority over chasing a perfect result on every panel.
Protection follows preparation
Once the finish reaches an appropriate level of correction, it can be protected with a system that fits the vehicle and its use.
