How Often Should You Detail Your Vehicle? An Honest Guide
Written by Wes Weaver
There is no single correct answer to how often you should detail your vehicle. It depends on how you use it, where it lives, what it is exposed to, and what level of condition you want to maintain. But there is a sensible framework that we recommend at Deep Reflections.
The Honest Baseline For most daily drivers in the Shenandoah Valley, a sensible schedule looks like this:
- **Every 1-2 weeks**: Rinse or quick wash to remove road grime, pollen, and bird droppings before they etch the clear coat
- **Every 2-3 months**: Full wash, wheels-deep clean, interior vacuum and wipe-down, glass cleaning, and a spray sealant for protection
- **Every 6-12 months**: Professional detail — paint decontamination, light polish if needed, interior deep clean, and protection refresh
- **Annually**: Full assessment of paint condition, clear coat health, and whether correction or re-protection is needed
What Changes the Schedule - **Daily highway commuting** in summer heat means more bug splatter and more frequent washing - **Parking under trees** means sap and pollen — rinse more often - **Winter driving** means road salt — get the undercarriage cleaned and treated - **A ceramic-coated or Icon Rocklear-protected vehicle** stays cleaner longer and needs less aggressive washing - **Show cars and garage-kept vehicles** need far less frequent deep cleaning
The Most Important Habit The single most valuable habit is not letting contaminants sit. Bird droppings etch clear coat in hours. Bug splatter becomes permanent in days. Salt corrosion starts fast. A quick rinse the same day costs nothing and prevents damage that a full detail later cannot reverse.
Do Not Over-Detail Washing too aggressively or too frequently with improper technique causes more damage than it prevents. A properly protected vehicle washed correctly every couple of weeks will look better and last longer than a vehicle dragged through a brush car wash weekly.
If you are unsure where your vehicle stands, bring it by. We will look at it honestly and tell you what it actually needs — not the biggest package.
