What Paint Correction Can — and Cannot — Fix
Paint correction is one of the most transformative services we offer at Deep Reflections. A badly swirled, hazy, oxidized finish can be brought back to a deep, mirror-like reflection that looks better than the day it left the dealership. But it is not magic, and it is not unlimited. Here is the honest line between what correction can and cannot do.
What Paint Correction CAN Fix - **Swirl marks** — the fine circular scratches from improper washing - **Light to moderate scratches** — scratches that sit within the clear coat - **Buffer trails and holograms** — left behind by improper machine polishing - **Oxidation and haze** — dull, chalky clear coat from sun and age exposure - **Water spots** — mineral etching on the surface - **Bird-dropping etching** — if it has not broken through the clear coat - **Fine marring and wash scratches** — from regular wear and tear
What Paint Correction CANNOT Fix - **Deep scratches** — if your fingernail catches in the scratch, it has gone through the clear coat and correction cannot remove it without removing too much material - **Stone chips** — rock impacts that have broken the paint down to primer or bare metal - **Clear coat failure** — peeling, flaking, or delamination where the clear coat itself has failed - **Repainting damage** — runs, orange peel, or solvent pop from a poor repaint require wet sanding or refinishing, not correction - **Dents and dings** — those require paintless dent repair or body work
How We Evaluate Before We Quote At Deep Reflections, we never correct paint without first measuring clear coat depth with a precision gauge. Clear coat is thin — typically 1.5 to 2.5 mils. Correction removes a fraction of that to level out the defects. If there is not enough clear coat to safely level, we will tell you honestly rather than polish through to the base coat.
We also inspect under LED shop lights to identify exactly what type of defect we are dealing with. A scratch that looks deep in sunlight may be shallow enough to correct. Or it may not be. We will not know until we see it under controlled lighting.
The Assessment-First Approach Every correction starts with an honest evaluation of your vehicle's clear coat condition, the type and severity of defects present, and what is realistically achievable. We will show you what we are seeing, explain the plan, and set honest expectations before any polisher touches your paint.
If you are wondering whether your vehicle's finish can be saved, bring it by the shop. We will tell you the truth — even if the answer is that it does not need correction yet.
